“I came in curious about maybe planting a couple vegetables in the backyard and left with plans to start a mini-farm! Stacey brings a lot of energy to class and her passion for urban farming is wonderfully contagious. ”

– Dan

"As a newbie grower, I really appreciate the coverage of the technologies, especially the home made ones. I'm not well connected to other growers in the area and I just started growing. So not knowing other growers, I could have spent a lot of unnecessary money on things I didn't need and a lot of time doing things the hard way." - Crystal

Wow all these lessons sounds like hard work?! I thought you said you were going to reduce my efforts?!

It is intense focused energy for 8 weeks. :) I will be pushing you harder than you’ve ever worked on your growing operation before, but it will be loads of fun. And I promise you it will be worth its weight in veggies.  Remember, once you’ve learned the systems, you can apply them again and again – and you will learn something new each time you revisit a module.

Is this the right time to take this course? +

Is this the right time to take this course?

It’s always the right time to focus on the big picture and see what you could improve, but you have to make sure that you put aside time in your day to sit down and focus on the course templates & exercises. If it's spring, you can start planting, and if it's the end of the growing season, you can build infrastructure, build soil and compost, cover crop and plan for your best harvest yet next growing season.

What if I don’t have land yet, can you still help me? +

What if I don’t have land yet, can you still help me?

Yes! In fact, you might benefit most. You can learn what to look for in a land partner and start from scratch with good habits for long term success. You’ll be poised to have a great growing season when you get started. I'll share how I found land in Brooklyn when I had no yard and walk you through that process.

I know that if I sat down for several weeks and did a lot of internet research, I could figure out a lot of this…why should I pay for this? +

I know that if I sat down for several weeks and did a lot of internet research, I could figure out a lot of this…why should I pay for this?

When I started growing vegetables, I had a whole lot of gardening knowledge and filled in some gaps using the internet. Then I saw a huge increase in the amount of food I could produce when several mentors helped me set up my systems. I want gardeners to benefit from these farm systems. Farm Management is something that farmers typically learn over the course of several seasons apprenticing in the field, and that information is not readily available on the internet. I want to guide you quickly through some of those systems so that you can grow as much food as a farmer in whatever space you have...even if you don't consider yourself a farmer

Also, understanding theory and practicing growing are two completely different things. Growing food is very nuanced, and typical how-to websites don’t necessarily tell you WHY you are doing something or how to decide if that particular method is right for you. Consider me your trail guide through all of this new terrain: I’m here to answer all your questions!

Who is this course NOT for? +

Who is this course NOT for?

Yes, some of you will HATE this course. If you have grown vegetables and herbs for more than 3 seasons, then this course may not be for you. I have had students with 9 years experience take the course and learn a lot, so you need to assess what makes sense for you.

If you are only looking for a deep dive into one of the topics of this course, then this course might not be for you.

If you are in USDA growing zone OUTSIDE of 5-10, you're going to work a little harder than everyone else to adapt the class to your needs. Most of my experience is in zones 6-7, but I have been growing in zones 5-10 and can help you adjust my templates for your needs.

My class templates are for growers who have between 150-365 days of growing each year. If you have less than 150 days, you will work a bit harder to adjust the course to your needs.

The course is designed for new growers who don't know where to start; have little luck growing vegetable and don't know why. It's for new-ish growers who are looking for systems to follow so they can gain experience without experiencing all the pitfalls. And this course is especially for you if you are fed up with weeding and wandering aimlessly in your growing space and want to grow some serious veggies. You know who you are.

Who's This For?

Our course appeals to a wide variety of people's interests and passions!

This course is excellent for anyone interested in organic gardening. Are you a first time backyard farmer? Don't know where to start? This course is for you! Have you already started but faced stressful setbacks or made costly mistakes? You'll get a lot out of this course. Do you want to get involved with a local garden or farm? This course is a great way to show up prepared.

Garden like a pro! Learn expert farm management insights developed over several growing seasons. It's special knowledge that you won't find on the internet.

“One of my goals for taking the course was to demystify the start up process. I genuinely feel I will use this course to start my own urban garden/farm.” – Kris
